Burn survivors often carry invisible scars from trauma. This blog introduces three proven therapies that can help with emotional healing: EMDR, which reprocesses painful memories using guided eye movements; Prolonged Exposure Therapy, which helps survivors safely confront trauma triggers; and Cognitive Processing Therapy, which challenges harmful beliefs and reframes self-worth. Each approach offers a path to peace and resilience. Healing Home Group is here to remind survivors: you've made it through the fire — now let's heal together. ??

When you’ve survived something as life-changing as a burn injury, the healing doesn’t stop at the skin. The emotional and psychological wounds can run just as deep. At Healing Home Group, we believe in whole-person healing — not just physically, but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually too. That’s why I want to share three powerful trauma therapies that are helping burn survivors like me reclaim peace, purpose, and power in our lives.

1. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

EMDR has been a game-changer for many survivors of trauma, including burns. It works by helping your brain reprocess painful memories so they no longer feel like they’re happening in the present. A therapist will guide you through recalling distressing experiences while using rhythmic eye movements or tapping to help your brain “file” those memories differently.

It may sound unusual at first, but it’s backed by research and recognized by the World Health Organization, the American Psychological Association, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. For survivors of fires or other life-threatening events, it can be incredibly empowering to take control back from the past.

2. Prolonged Exposure Therapy

Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) is about facing what scares you — slowly and safely. Burn survivors may avoid reminders of the trauma (like sirens, hospital smells, mirrors, or certain places) because they’re overwhelming. PE helps you confront those memories or situations with the guidance of a therapist so your brain can learn: “I survived. I’m safe now.”

Developed by Dr. Edna Foa, PE is considered a gold standard for treating PTSD. Many people experience real, lasting relief and an improved quality of life after completing this treatment.

3. Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is all about the stories we tell ourselves after trauma — and rewriting the ones that hold us back. After a burn injury, it’s easy to blame ourselves or feel like we’re “damaged.” CPT helps challenge those negative beliefs and reframe them. You start seeing the truth: that you are strong, worthy, and still whole — no matter what happened to your body.

CPT is structured, short-term, and research-based — and it’s been proven effective for survivors of trauma of all kinds, including physical injury.
